Customer Profile: A small cooperative bank
Problem: The chairman of the board of directors had a feeling that the bank was overstaffed compared to the volume of operations. We were requested to conduct a study and present to him the optimum staffing level.
Solution: We undertook a detailed Value Stream Mapping exercise across all the areas of functioning of the bank and we tracked the time taken for every step of the operation of each business process. We tracked the number of transactions over a period of 6 months for each of these processes. Based on this we were able to arrive at the number of people (including buffer and back up) which we presented to the board of directors.
Benefit: The report was an eye opener to the board of the bank and the excess staffing level was seen to be to the tune of 100%. So it was very clear to the management that there was considerable amount of opportunity to reduce costs and increase the operational efficiency of the bank.
